Master trombonist Steve Turre has been affiliated with a long list of jazz giants, including Ray Charles, Woody Shaw, Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner, J.J. Johnson, Herbie Hancock, Lester Bowie, Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Van Morrison, Pharoah Sanders, Horace Silver, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Rahsaan introduced Steve to the sea shells as a musical instrument.
Steve Turre's classic Fire & Ice (Stash Records, 1988) with Cedar Walton piano, Buster Williams bass, and Billy Higgins drums, features John Blake violin and introduces Quartette Indigo with Gayle Dixon & John Blake violins, Melvyn Roundtree viola, and Akua Dixon cello.
